Built 1932 by Elisabeth Scott as Shakespeare Memorial Theatre, incorporating the relics of the previous Shakespeare Memorial Theatre (built 1879, destroyed by a fire in 1926) as rehearsal and conference rooms. Named in honour of the Stratford-born English playwright, poet, and actor, William Shakespeare (ca.1564-1616). 1936-1991 continuous alterations. 1960 renamed Royal Shakespeare Theatre. 2007-2010 major rebuilding. One of the homes of the Royal Shakespeare Company. 1412 seats. - 1986 conversion of the conference wing by Michael Reardon, re-opened as Swan Theatre (432 seats) and Ashcroft Room. Addition of a new tower at the site of the 1879 tower. (English)
