The machine has some rope guides on the side of the drum. There are severla theses on what they could be used for: remote control, where the machine is on the bridges, but controlled from the ground floor; connecting two machines (the theatre has a similar wind machine); changing the sound by letting a rope slip in the guides; or controling the machine with pedles or a bike like control for long scenes.
